Activity
Impact
Mitigation
Sourcing of construction
materials
Mining of material is not
environmentally sound and
results in ecological,
hydrological, aesthetic, and
land use impacts. Other
material may not be sourced
sustainably producing
adverse impacts.
Independent environmental
review for procurement of
construction material.
Ancillary temporary facilities
such as: maintenance areas,
staff camps, access roads,
and storage areas
Loss or degradation of
wildlife, vegetation, habitat
and species, changes in
hydrology, impacts to
cultural resources
Phase construction to
minimize footprint of
temporary facilities.
Decommissioning
If construction camps and
other ancillary features are
not dismantled in a timely
manner, they will degrade
over time, and can impact
soil and create a public
hazard.
Temporary facilities are
removed immediately
following construction.
Removal will include
disposal of solid waste,
buildings, etc. A provision
will be included in the
engineering contract for
complete decommissioning
prior to finalizing payment.
Water supply for
construction camps
Deplete ground and/or
surface water resources and
damage local ecosystems.
Pose risks to human health
if contaminants are present
in the water and cause
groundwater contamination.
Determine safe and
sustainable yield and
establish system for
regulating use. Test seasonal
water quality and examine
historical water quality and
quantity data before
building facility. Incorporate
sitting, design, and
operation and maintenance
practices that minimize
environmental impacts.
Development and
construction of standpipes
Create pools of stagnant
water that could support
malaria transmitting
mosquitoes and other
vectors.
Construct soakway or
equivalent structure to
divert spilled water and
rainwater. Monitor and
repair leaks from cracked
containment structures,
broken pipes, faulty valves,
and similar structures.
