2. Connect the Serial ATA and Parallel ATA cables to the drives and host adapter ports
on the motherboard (see Figure 19.26 ) . Typically, older systems will use the primary
ATA channel connector for hard disks and the secondary channel for optical drives.
Most newer systems will use Serial ATA connections for the hard drive and Parallel
ATA for the optical drives, or possibly even SATA connections for all drives.

Note
Some recent motherboards mount their SATA ports on one edge of the motherboard facing
towards the drive bays.
3. Attach the front-panel switch, LED, internal speaker wires, and front-mounted ports
suchasUSBandIEEE1394(referto Figure19.26 fortypicalheaders)andaudiofrom
the case front panel to the motherboard. If they are not marked on the board, check
where each one is on the diagram in the motherboard manual. Figure 19.27 shows
the front-panel connectors. Unfortunately, even though there are standards for these
types of connections, many motherboard and chassis manufacturers don't follow the
industry standards, and you might find some frustration in getting these connections
right. Chapter 4 has detailed pinouts and connection diagrams for most motherboards
and chassis.
