There are many beneicial aspects to large woody debris, and its reintroduction is a common goal
of river restoration projects. However, the introduction of large woody debris, and the consequent
loss of riparian vegetation, due to bank instability, as illustrated in Figure 3.27, often has negative
impacts. For example, in the Yalobusha River, the recruitment of large woody debris resulted in the
formation of a nearly 2-mile long plug of the river (Figure 3.28), which resulted in increases in the
