10.4.2.5 Energy Dissipation
Often, reservoir releases have considerable potentially destructive energy associated with them,
which, if not dissipated, can result in damage to the structure, scour below the dam, and other unde-
sirable impacts. An example is when water is passed through a spillway and down steep chutes, where
the water is basically in free fall. If that energy is not dissipated, it may often result in scour. For
example, the spillway releases between 1962 and 1982 from the Kariba Dam (Zambia-Zimbabwe),
