Many of the modern and perhaps most cited references in this ield were developed by Robert G.
Wetzel (Figure 9.7). His textbooks and writing, along with his many awards, such as the G. Evelyn
Hutchinson Medal of the American Society of Limnology, made him perhaps the best-known
modern limnologist. His contributions included his three editions of

, culminating with

, completed 4 years before his
death in 2005.
