8.4.10.4 Fish Screens Installed
One solution to prevent ish from passing through or being entrained in structures, such as water
intakes for water supply, cooling, hydropower, etc., involves physically stopping them by using
screens at water intakes. The screens have to guide ish toward a bypass, generally accomplished by
placing them diagonally to the low, with the bypass in the downstream part of the screen. Uniform
velocities and eddy-free currents upstream of the screens must be provided to effectively guide ish
toward the bypass (ASCE 1995; Larinier and Travade 1999).
