Gaining remote access to your Raspberry Pi
to control appliances
It is possible to remotely log in to Raspberry Pi using SSH ( Secure Shell ). An organizaion
called Weaved ( http://www.weaved.com/ ) provides the capabiliies to log in .
The tutorial available from https://www.juicypi.io/access-your-raspberry-pi-
anywhe re-in-the-world-using-weaved/ provides detailed instrucions to install the
requisite tools.
This enables you to control the devices interfaced to Raspberry Pi.
Some project ideas to consider
F In houses with long hallways, it is not always possible to hear the doorbell ring from
the far end of the house. It is possible to pla ce a force sensiive resistor ( https:/ /
www.sparkfun.com/products/9375 ) to track any visitors to the house. Likewise,
it is possible to track packages left on the doormat.
F In Project 6 , Raspberry Pi as a Personal Assistant (the personal assistant project), we
built a small enclosure to keep track of keys using a reed switch. A similar concept
can be used to track items using a reed switch.
F There is a wireless protocol called Z-Wave that was specifically designed for home
automaion purposes. Raspberry Pi can be turned into a control centre to wirelessly
control appliances using the Z-Wave modules. Raspberry compaible mod ules are
available for sale at http://razberry.z-wave.me/ (check out this topic's site
for some examples).
F In Project 5 , Internet of Things Example - An E-mail Alert Water Fountain , we built a
web server that can set colors of the RGB LED strip. There are some interesing ideas
to decorate our ho mes with these RGB LED strips ( http://www.usledsupply.
com/shop/instal l/project-photos-and-ideas.html ).
F GE Appliances has come up with an interesing development tool that can be used to
control products from GE. This tool in combinaion with Raspberry Pi (running Twisted
server) can be used to control GE products in someone's home. In the future, all GE
appliances will be capable of being connected to a smart devices network.
Mission accomplished
In this project, we looked into diferent soluions that can be implemented using Raspberry
Pi over a weekend. We reviewed some basic examples that can be possibly tweaked to turn a
home into a smart one.
