Mission checklist
The following hardware items are required for this project:
1. Raspberry Pi along with the necessary accessories (an SD card—at least 4GB in size,
1A USB power supply, and a micro-USB power cable).
2. Power Switch Tail II from Adafruit that is availabl e at http://www.adafruit.
com/product /268 .
3. Ethernet cables/Wi-Fi adapter (opional, needed to connect the Raspberry Pi
to a network).
4. Sensors of your choice. For example, Soil moisture sensor.
5. General hardware from the local store (this depends upon the reader's project
requirements).
6. Arduino Ethernet Board (opional) available at http://arduino.cc/en/Main/

We will install the software prerequisites as we review each example in this project.
A simple example that controls
limited indoor and outdoor lighting
in the evening
Let's consider a scenario where a person lives in a neighborhood that is not so well lit. In
winter, the temperatures are usually extreme in ciies such as Chicago and the sun usually
sets around 5 p.m. The poorly lit neighborhood along with the cold weather makes it difficult
for a person to enter their home.
We will build a simple soluion that turns on a light (that can be either an outdoor or indoor
hallway light) that speeds up the process of entering a building.
