fi sh bone revealed the presence of a similar aliphatic component (C 8 to C 30, data not
shown). The eye was not analysed.
EDX analysis of the decapod revealed a composition dominated by Ca and P with
some O, indicating apatite. No fi ne surface structure was evident. Py-GC-MS
revealed an aliphatic composition (C 8 to C 21 ) with benzene and phenol derived com-
pounds and no original chitin/protein (Fig. 11.6b ).
