Proposed drawbridge at Poole, with open leaves mimicking sails
The team that produced the Gateshead Millennium Bridge subsequently entered another com-
petition, this time succeeding with a strikingly original bascule-bridge design for the large natural
harbor at Poole, which is a renowned center for sailing located on the southern coast of England.
Wilkinson Eyre Architects, as the firm is now known, in collaboration with Gifford & Partners and
with the mechanical engineers Bennett & Associates, who were responsible for the all-important
opening mechanism of the Gateshead structure, have come up with a bridge for Poole harbor with
leaves that are triangular. In the raised position, the 120-foot-long movable spans resemble tall sails,
complete with even taller masts, which sit beside the roadway when the bridge is in the closed po-
sition. The crossing was expected to be completed in 2006 and should be another eye-opening ex-
ample of how bridges can be more than functional.
