Regardless of what may be thought of millennium madness, anniversaries, outstanding lists, pre-
dictions, and the like, the naming of the greatest engineering achievements provided an opportunity
for all the beneficiaries of these achievements to reflect on the nature and importance of engineer-
ing and its virtually endless, if not countless, contributions to making daily life so much more com-
fortable and convenient than it must have been a century ago, let alone a millennium ago. In many
cases, twentieth-century engineers pushed the limits of technology to accomplish things that were
not even dreamed of in the nineteenth century. And so it will be in the twenty-first century, with
the contents of any list of engineering achievements that will be compiled in the late 2090s being
virtually unpredictable today.
