In-Depth Information
Innovations in the LEAPmbr product include the increased surface area of the ZeeWeed
membrane module, simpliied aeration piping, elimination of air cycling valves, optimi-
zation of the membrane tank design, increased productivity of the ZeeWeed modules,
reduction in blower size, and introduction of LEAPmbr Aeration Technology. LEAPmbr
Aeration Technology employs large bubbles, released at shorter cycle times as a single-
phase low from aerators below the modules. This produces a better scouring action, and
the net result is a more eficient membrane air scour process. Extensive full-scale ield
validation has been performed at multiple plants to challenge the performance in a range
of operating environments.
The increased productivity in LEAPmbr technology provides a reduction in membrane
cassette requirements with fewer membrane modules necessary to treat a given capac-
ity. This productivity boost comes without a compromise to quality and reliability as the
ZeeWeed membrane remains at the core of this technology, continuing a legacy of being a
highly reliable and high-performing membrane in the industry (Figure 39.2).
39.2.2 ZeeWeed Building Blocks
A full-scale ZeeWeed treatment facility comprises a given number of modular components:
modules, cassettes, and trains. A module is the basic building block and the heart of a ZeeWeed
system. Each module contains thousands of vertically strung membrane ibers that have mil-
lions of microscopic pores in each strand. Water is iltered by applying a slight vacuum to the
end of each iber, which draws the water through the tiny pores and into the ibers themselves.
The pores form a physical barrier that allows clean water to pass through while blocking
unwanted material such as suspended solids, bacteria, pathogens, and certain viruses.
Modules are joined together to form a cassette, which is the smallest operable unit of
the iltration system (Figure 39.3). Each cassette can have a variety of module conigura-
tions depending on the amount of water that the cassette is required to treat. Multiple cas-
settes are joined to form what is known as a process train. The train is a production unit
