the courage of its governor (Herrera), the local water leaders, and CONAGUA. By the end
of 2013, TWI estimates that it will have deployed 100,000 units, thus rapidly changing the
future health of much more than a half million people.
We have currently established programs in six Mexican states with an equal number
of additional states targeted over the next 12 months. We are also employing our unique
iterative innovation process in other Latin countries and have just commenced in Africa.
Figure 21.7 shows the rate of deployment of TWI 1.0 and 2.0 units. Now TWI is on a foun-
dation that allows us to continue to innovate and grow our worldwide pure-play water

21.5 TWI: Continuous Innovation
Since TWI has implemented a philosophy of continuous innovation from day one, and
embedded that innovation process into the company operations, we have been able to uti-
lize our 3-D process in more communities, allowing us to extend the TWI 2.0x series and
develop a new TWI 3.0 product in the future.
The TWI 2.0x products include derivatives of TWI 2.0 that are a direct result of the con-
tinued 3-D process. In some regions, very high levels of arsenic are periodically diag-
nosed, and therefore we have developed a variant that has an even higher capacity to
remove arsenic. Also, we have diagnosed regions with high levels of luoride. Fluoride
is particularly challenging because of the high concentrations requiring removal (parts
per million) levels for luoride vs. ppb levels for arsenic that challenge media adsorption
capacities. Nonetheless, we have created luoride products, utilizing proprietary tech-
niques developed by TWI, that can last years in the ield and remain economically viable
for the municipality and the product user. As part of this process, TWI utilizes proprietary,
nanostructured, high-capacity material to address these elevated contamination levels.
Looking forward, TWI is developing a new product series, 3.0, which combines our mar-
ket application, technology, and business factor knowledge in new ways. This product
will be a very portable product with ilter inserts to address the particular water prob-
lems within a region. Thus, we have converged on another innovation that can span the
