18.4.2.4 Coordinating and Monitoring Regulation and Ethical Aspects
Finally, the aforementioned intermediary institutes can help in achieving transparency
and needed coordination in dealing with regulatory and ethical aspects.
18.5 Conclusions
Technology achievements, when aligned with policy tools, can reshape the already expe-
rienced EKC patterns in growth-environmental relationships. This is a very important
opportunity that must not be overlooked by developing countries. Nanotechnology is one
very promising emerging technology in this aspect. We tried to show the potential of
nanotechnology in this regard by focusing on water applications and giving the example
of groundwater remediation. We exercised a deeper look into the assessment of the new
technology by considering technology life cycle, product life cycle, and socioeconomic
aspects, all in parallel. The aforementioned typical comprehensive assessments make it
clear that there are quite a number of challenges and barriers that cannot be solved in
time without an effective international cooperation and coordination. Finally, a few policy
recommendations were provided, and it was emphasized that international focused coor-
dinating institutes can have a major role in implementing these policies.
