erythrosepala , from which were isolated the two macrocyclic oligomers
oenothein A and B, is presumed to be a descendant from an American
wild species, once cultivated.
The root peel of Punica granatum ( Punicaceae ) is an anthelmintic
widely used against tapeworm. The ellagitannins granatins A and B and
punicalin promote the anthelmintic effect of isopelletierine, which is not
very effective when used alone. The fruit peel of this tree has also been
used in Central and Western Asia as a gargling liquid for throat diseases.
The fruit of Cornus officinalis ( Cornaceae ), rich in cornusiins A, D
and E (dimers), and C and F1 (trimers) (Hatano et al. , 1989a/b), is a tonic
in several prescriptions of traditional Chinese medicine. The flower of
Camellia japonica ( Theaceae ) was used as a hemostatic in China.
