Recyclers seldom sleep . One might think that all decomposition stops during winter, but fungi and
bacteria can continue their activity under the snow when the temperature remains around zero.
Decomposition is slow when it is cold but seldom stops altogether and there is no risk that condi-
tions will be too dry under the snow. But if water saturates the ground, expelling oxygen, decom-
position proceeds much more slowly. This is why marshes can have peat layers several metres thick
