A pocket in time. Take a walk through the spruce forest near Gjøvik in Norway and you may
come across this clearing, devoid of vegetation due to the high lead content in the ground. The
area was discovered by Norwegian geologists who ascertained the presence of mineral deposits
by noting changes in the vegetation. Below the surface is a seam of galena which may be mined
in the future. Scientists use the area to study how vegetation affects soil formation, comparing
soil in the forest to that in the clearing
