. A pan-European network of masts is being built to enable more accurate meas-
urement of the exchange of greenhouse gases between soil and atmosphere. The masts will meas-
ure national contributions to the greenhouse effect and enable scientists to compare emissions
from fossil fuels with other human activities such as agriculture and transport. Precise data are
required for advanced computer models that calculate carbon dioxide balances at national and
continental level
