In-Depth Information
Fijian team won the Rugby World Cup Sevens in 1997 and 2005. The full fifteen-a-side team
has also excelled but never quite matches the high expectations of the people - the national
team reached the last eight of the 2007 Rugby World Cup, and were prevented from reach-
ing the quarter finals in 2011 by a thumping Welsh victory. Several Fiji-born players , Lote
Tuqiri and Sitiveni Sivivatu to name a couple, have been poached to play for Australia and
New Zealand, although they still remain local heroes in their homeland.
Another international star is golfer Vijay Singh who claimed the world number one title
from Tiger Woods between 2004 and 2005. He has also won three major championships (The
Masters, 2000; PGA Championship, 1998 and 2004) - not bad considering he used to prac-
tise with coconuts on the beach as a child in Nadi. Other sports Fiji has excelled at on the
world stage include netball, lawn bowls and judo.
