In-Depth Information
lages singing fara songs and clapping their hands for a beat. When the kids stop at a house,
the family comes out to watch, rewarding them with gifts of perfume, talc and fruit, usually
watermelon. If the singing is poor, water is thrown to chase the group away. As the evening
progresses, the rest of the villagers join in, grabbing guitars, ukuleles and perhaps a bucket
of orange wine. If you visit Rotuma during fara you will certainly be invited to take part.
ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE
By plane The grass airstrip at Malhaha on the north coast of Rotuma is served exclusively
by Pacific Sun from Nadi (departs Fri; 30min; F$630 one-way). There are always plenty of
small trucks meeting incoming flights at the airstrip and you should be able to negotiate a
ride.
By boat Western Shipping runs a cargo boat between Suva and Oinafa wharf on the north-
east coast of Rotuma (monthly, usually on Sat; 2-day journey; deck F$118, cabin F$180).
INFORMATION AND ACCOMMODATION
Visiting Rotuma without a personal invitation is tricky. One option is to post a message to
rotuma.net , the island's community website and bulletin board: someone locally may be
willing to organize a homestay for you. Tourism Fiji ( fiji.travel ) are more used to deal-
ing with mainstream destinations, but may be able to assist. Otherwise, try asking around in
Suva to locate expatriate Rotumans who may put you in contact with a relative back home.
