In-Depth Information
3 Lautoka A run-of-the-mill Fijian town, Lautoka provides a refreshingly non-touristy ex-
perience, and has one of the finest markets in the country.
4 Navala With its two hundred thatched bures, Navala is the most beautiful place in Fiji to
observe traditional life at close hand.
5 Waya Allow another night in Nadi before the early start required for the Yasawa Flyer
catamaran. The choice of island stop-offs is yours if you buy the Bula Pass, but Waya is one
of the highlights, with its rocky peaks and white sand shore.
6 Naviti The largest of the Yasawas, Naviti features some great snorkelling opportunities,
particularly the blue depths and manta rays of the Drawaqa lagoon.
7 The northern Yasawas You'll find a good range of accommodation on these low-lying is-
lands, as well as coral reefs, turquoise lagoons and the limestone caves of Sawa-i-Lau.
AROUND VITI LEVU
The largest island in Fiji has a little bit of everything: townscapes, ancient sites and gorgeous
beaches. This route takes you on an anti-clockwise circuit of the island, with a detour to
Ovalau. Allow at least eight days.
1 Nadi Starting out at Nadi, take the coastal bus southeast around the island along the Queens
Road.
2 Sigatoka Hop off at the national park at Sigatoka and follow the walking routes through
secondary forest and onto sand dunes, where ancient burial sites are regularly revealed by
storms.
3 Coral Coast Continue east, where the Coral Coast provides a gentle start to any trip, with
relaxed, long-established resorts edging the warm seas.
4 Suva The only real city in Fiji, Suva has plenty of metropolitan charm: colonial architec-
ture, some excellent Fiji-Indian restaurants, bars and clubs and a fine museum.
5 Ovalau This volcanic island with mountain rainforest is a fascinating diversion from Viti
Levu. The highpoint is laid-back Levuka, Fiji's former capital and a World Heritage Site.
6 Kings Road Back on the main island, continue your circuit by heading back to Nadi via
the northern Kings Road. If you have time to dawdle, stop off at some resorts on the way.
VANUA LEVU AND TAVEUNI
Small planes, ferries, speedboats and buses provide the transport for this itinerary through
northern Vanua Levu and east to the garden island of Taveuni. Allow ten days to give you
time to explore the highlights - Savusavu and Taveuni - with as much leisure as possible.
1 Labasa From Nadi, take a flight to Labasa. The miniscule airport amongst the sugar cane
is a sight in itself.
