In-Depth Information
Two kilometres west of Naselesele Point is Beverley Beach , a deep sandy gem backed by
lush hardwood trees. The coral reef here lies close to shore and offers great snorkelling along
a 30m-deep drop-off, with reef sharks occasionally paying a visit. Confident swimmers can
also reach the snorkelling reef off Natadrua Island, in the sheltered lagoon 700m off the north
side of Matei, but it's best to paddle out on a kayak .

normally at high tide.
ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE: MATEI
By plane There are regular flights to Matei from both Nadi (2 daily) and Nausori, outside
Suva (2 daily), as well as a weekly flight (Wed; F$130) from Savusavu. The flights give awe-
some views on clear days. In bad weather, turbulence can be a problem, especially with the
frequent crosswinds at Matei. A small, much photographed wooden hut welcomes visitors to
the airport. There is usually a taxi waiting for incoming flights - the fare to Matei is around
F$3. Most guests with pre-booked accommodation are met by their hosts.
Destinations Nadi Airport (2 daily; 1hr 25min); Nausori, Suva (2 daily; 1hr); Savusavu (1
weekly; 20min).
By bus A rather erratic and infrequent bus service links Matei with locations to the west and
east; you can flag down the bus from your accommodation place, but as it's often late this
may mean hanging around.
Destinations Lavena (3 daily; 1hr 15min); Naqara (3 daily; 30min).
