Tobu-ni-tavo Waterfall
18km north of Savusavu, off the Labasa Rd • Buses from Savusavu to Labasa can drop you at the turn-off to
Vuadomo; a taxi will cost around F$30
North of Savusavu, the attractive Tobu-ni-tavo Waterfall makes a pleasant day-trip. Head
north on the road to Labasa, past the pretty village of Jerusalemi, keeping an eye out for
Vuadomo Road on the left, 16km from Savusavu. A steep 2km dirt track leads down to
Vuadomo Village on the coast, where you pay a small entrance fee to visit the waterfall, an
easy twenty-minute hike up the valley.
Waisali Nature Reserve
31km north of Savusavu, off the Labasa Rd • Mon-Sat 9am-3pm • F$8 • Buses from Savusavu to Labasa can
drop you at the Reserve; a taxi will cost around F$50
Around 30km north of Savusavu is Waisali Nature Reserve , administered by the National
Trust but in a rather neglected state. From the car park, the thirty-minute waterfall trail leads
down through lush tropical rainforest. Look out for orchids en route to the waterfall: there are
around thirty species in the area. The reserve is also perhaps the last remaining home of the
endangered Fiji ground frog.
The Hibiscus Highway
Heading south from Savusavu, past the airport, the Buca Bay Road turns eastward, hugging
the southern coastline of Vanua Levu to the eastern tip of the island at Buca Bay. The first
20km of road out of Savusavu - nicknamed the Hibiscus Highway - is tar sealed, and passes
old copra plantations, colonial-style homesteads and several quiet resorts along the coast, al-
though there are no restaurants or shops. There is generally good snorkelling off the coast,
especially around the mushroom islets of Maravu Point, but you'll have to walk out some
way from shore over a raised platform of dead exposed coral to get to the reefs. A decent
public sandy beach backed by rows of massively tall coconut palms is accessed through a
gate at Sigasiga Sands .
GETTING AROUND: THE HIBISCUS HIGHWAY
By bus The Hibiscus Highway is served by buses travelling between Savusavu and Nabuka
on Buca Bay (3 daily).
