FESTIVALS IN SAVUSAVU
Two of the best times to visit Savusavu are during Savusavu Festival Week in November,
when local arts, music and culture are promoted, and during the annual Hindu Krishna
Lele Festival , which features fire walking and is held at the Khemendra School just before
Christmas.
The town centre
The town is strung along Ratu Suliano Street, better known simply as Main Street . The com-
mercial centre with the bus stand, municipal market, post office, banks and shops lies at the
eastern end of the street; this area springs to life on Fridays and Saturdays with an influx of
visitors from the countryside, who come to trade at the market , where there's the usual won-
derful display of fresh produce.
Copra Shed Marina
To the west of the commercial centre is the Copra Shed Marina , which marks the beginning
of the town's quieter quarters where Main Street hugs the foreshore. Here you'll find the
Yacht Club , which has beautiful views overlooking the bay across to distant blue-tinted
mountains. You can sip a drink at the water's edge here, eat at one of two lovely waterfront
restaurants or shop in the posh boutiques nearby.
The hot springs
Nakama Rd, across from the playing field
Two hundred metres south of the marina up Nakama Road are Savusavu's hot springs . The
three small bubbling pools are too hot to bathe in and are often full of sacks of dalo being
slowly cooked. The boiling water trickles into a small stream below the pools where it cools
sufficiently to dip a toe in.
The pearl farm on Nawi Island
Nawi Island • Farm tours (1hr 30min) Mon-Fri 9.30am & 1.30pm • F$25 • 885 0821, pearlsfiji.com
West from the town centre along the gritty beachfront is the jetty for the underwater pearl
farm at Nawi Island, which you can visit to learn about the unique multi-hued pearl produc-
tion in Savusavu Bay. Tours take place on a glass-bottomed boat and there's usually time for
a quick snorkel (bring your own gear). If you're visiting between October and November or
April and May you'll get to see the harvesting of the pearls by hand.
