In-Depth Information
off to Bau to be eaten - only two people were left alive. A few years later, an Australian
named Riley was given a portion of the island as a dowry, having married the daughter of a
Verata chief. Today, Naigani has a population of around fifty, descendants of the two surviv-
ing islanders and Riley's offspring. They live in a village on the north coast, lodged between
two volcanic peaks. The original village is found on the northernmost peak, protected by a
rim with a killing stone at its entrance. A large hillfort higher up was used for additional
security at times of war. Large amounts of Lapita pottery have been discovered around the
island dating back more than two thousand years.
ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE: NAIGANI ISLAND
By boat You can visit Naigani by boat on a day-trip from Ovalau, from either Bobo's Farm or
Salana Village Stay , but the most practical way to visit is to stay at the island's resort, which
arranges guest transfers from Natovi Landing on Viti Levu or Taviya Village on Ovalau, both
around a 30min journey.
ACCOMMODATION
Naigani Island Resort 603 0613, naiganiisland.com . This intimate resort is built

Caqalai and Leleuvia
Two small islands along Ovalau's south coast, Caqalai and Leleuvia , possess beach resorts
and are becoming popular with backpackers keen to avoid the increasingly commercial Yas-
awa Islands trail. The nicest is Caqalai Island , where at low tide you can wade out to nearby
Snake Island , which offers good snorkelling and the chance to spot black-and-white sea
snakes . Although they are extremely venomous, the snakes are so timid and agile that you
will have little chance of getting near them. Even better snorkelling is available at Honey-
moon Island , a sand spit 5km to the east where you'll likely spot small reef sharks hiding
amongst the coral.
ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE: CAQALAI AND LELEUVIA
By resort transfer Both resorts arrange guest transfers from Viti Levu (at Waidalice Landing
north of Nausori) or from Levuka port. Costs from Waidalice are F$40 per person one-way,
with a minimum of two people. You can reach Waidalice by taxi from Suva (F$55) or by bus/
minivan via Nausori (F$7). From Levuka, the 40min boat journey costs F$35 to Caqalai or
Leleuvia.
