EATING AND DRINKING
Levuka has just enough
restaurants
to keep you happy on a short visit, but with only a
trickle of tourists and few residents dining out, they lack panache.
Groceries
can be bought
at Kishore Supermarket (Mon-Sat 6.30am-6.30pm, Sun 7-11am), next to the
Whale's Tale
restaurant on Beach St. For
drinking
, the century-old
Ovalau Club
is your best bet; alternat-
ively, the courtyard in front of the
Royal Hotel
is a good choice for a quiet afternoon tipple.
Kim's Paak Kum Loong
Beach St 344 0059.
This place has a bit of everything:
Chinese, Indian, European and Fijian. Meals are hearty and cheap, starting from F$8 for ve-
getarian stir-fry and going up to F$15 for lamb curry or fish in
lolo
sauce. There's outdoor
dining on the wooden veranda with views of the waterfront, but the drone from the town's
electricity generators may irritate.
Mon-Sat 7am-2pm & 6-9pm, Sun 6-9pm.
Levuka Pizza at Na Koro Makawa
Beach St 344 0429.
Located almost opposite the tuna
cannery, the speciality here is tuna pizza (F$8.50), something of an acquired taste; other pop-
ular toppings include prawn and lobster. If you don't fancy pizza, fish and chips and stir-fry
are also on the menu.
Daily 7am-2pm & 6-9pm.
Ovalau Club
Nasau Park.
Long-established social club where you can chat with the friendly
regulars over a beer or play snooker on a full-sized table for twenty cents a game. Local bands
sometimes play at weekends, when the club's at its liveliest; otherwise visit on a Tues for the
weekly residents' get together (from 6pm).
Mon-Thurs 4-10pm, Fri 2-11pm, Sat 10am-1am,
Sun 10am-9pm.
Ovalau Holiday Resort
North Levuka 344 0329.
This resort restaurant is run by an Indian
family, so the curry dishes are nicely authentic. They also offer tasty seafood including lob-
ster and crab. It's 5km north of town, but if you call ahead they'll offer free pick-up and drop-
off to your hotel.
Daily noon-2pm & 6-9pm.
Whale's Tale
Beach St 344 0235.
A charming nautical ambience and delightful home
cooking make this a top choice - they're a local legend for their fish and chips. The lunchtime
burgers are also spot-on, and the set dinner at F$25 is good value.
Mon-Sat noon-2pm &
6-10pm.
