In-Depth Information
yaqona - if you buy a Fiji Bitter “long neck”, which is more economical, it will be shared
by passing round a small glass to down in one. It's a quick way of getting drunk and brawls
occasionally break out in the wilder places. However, the locals are very protective of foreign
visitors and on most occasions you'll be well looked after. Taxis are advisable for the ride
back to your hotel (see Safety in Suva ) .
BARS
Holiday Inn Suva Victoria Parade 330 1600, ihg.com ; map . If you're after a quiet drink,
the lounge bar at the Holiday Inn is the best choice, although it's somewhat pricey. There's
a pianist accompanied by light jazz musicians (Tues-Thurs) and a good R&B vocalist on Fri
nights. Happy hour 5.30-6.30pm. Daily 4-9.30pm.
O'Reillys Bar 5 MacArthur St, corner of Victoria Parade 331 2322; map . Popular with
tourists and USP students, the bouncers here keep a tight grip on proceedings. There's loud
music, plus a large-screen TV and pool table at the back; it's also the only place in Fiji you'll
find Guinness on tap. The bar is connected to the Bad Dog Café on the corner, which has a
wine bar serving overpriced but well-presented food. Mon-Sat 11am-midnight, Sun 5-11pm.
Royal Suva Yacht Club Queens Rd, Walu Bay 330 4201, rsyc.org.fj ; map . A bit out of
the way - 2km from the city centre in Walu Bay - but with a lovely beer garden overlooking
the sea it's an ideal spot to watch the sunset over a draught beer, and the bar snacks are good
too. Happy hour Tues & Sat 6-7pm. Mon-Thurs 8am-10pm, Fri-Sun 8am-midnight.
Traps Lounge 305 Victoria Parade 331 2922; map . The main bar at the front is the
place to be seen for an after-work tipple. There's a pool bar at the back, a non-smoking chill-
out lounge at the top and a buzzing dance floor with live music Wed and Thurs from 10pm.
F$5 admission some weekends. Mon-Sat 5pm-1am.
CLUBS
Bar 66 Dolphin Plaza, Victoria Parade, entrance on Loftus St 870 6071; map . Hangout for
the hip under-25s, with DJs playing pop and reggae and a small dancefloor. It doesn't get go-
ing until after 11pm and it's usually the last place to close, picking up the crowds from Traps
after midnight. Tues-Sat 9pm-late.
Golden Dragon 379 Victoria Parade 331 1018; map . Long-standing favourite amongst
the islanders with live music Wed and Thurs, mostly reggae-influenced, and lots of university
students out for a laugh - you'll often see Polynesians dancing the hula here. Admission F$5
after 9pm Fri & Sat. Mon-Sat 7pm-midnight.
Shenanigans 5 MacArthur St 331 2322; map . International beers and spirits alongside
ubiquitous Fiji Golds, plus dance music, dancing and a lively atmosphere. Mon-Sat
