In-Depth Information
Nagatagata to Nubutautau
Walkers should aim to arrive at Nagatagata in the morning and ask for a guide (expect to
pay around F$40) for the three-hour trek to remote Nubutautau . It was here in 1867 that the
Reverend Thomas Baker was killed and devoured by the villagers - the steel axe used in the
attack is still kept in the village. If you wish to continue along the trail you should present a
sevusevu in order to stay the night.
Nubutautau to Korolevu
After overnighting in Nubutautau, you'll be guided the following morning by a lad from the
village along the difficult but scenic six-hour walk to the highlands village of Korolevu (not
to be confused with Korolevu on the Coral Coast), crossing the Sigatoka River a dozen times
along the way - it's really only practical during the dry winter months from May to October,
and then best in stable weather. Once at Korolevu, you can catch the daily early morning car-
rier van for the 75km journey down to Sigatoka on the south coast.
Nanoko
From Nagatagata, it's also possible to head east across the interior to Nanoko village . The
route takes six hours on foot or ninety minutes by 4WD vehicle and is only possible in dry
weather - ask the Nadarivatu district officer ( 651 0756) about the state of the road before
heading out. From Nanoko it's a short drive to Bukuya in the Nausori Highlands, from where
you can head down to Nadi.
ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE: NUBUTAUTAU AND THE NADRAU
PLATEAU
By bus A bus operated by Nadan ( 668 0150; F$5) departs Tavua for Nagatagata via
Nadarivatu at 3.30pm on Mon, Tues, Thurs and Fri.
Tavua to Rakiraki
The journey east along the Kings Road from Tavua to Rakiraki passes through the vast cattle
farmland of Yaqara. The scenery here resembles a mini Wild West, with cowboys rounding
up the herds and the rugged mountain scenery of the Nakauvadra Range in the background.
Further along the coast is the small market town of Rakiraki , also known as Vaileka Town.
Nearby is the pretty coastal setting of Volivoli Point and the beautiful offshore island of
Nananu-i-Ra , both featuring some lovely holiday cottages.
