Mana
Mana
is one of the best islands in the Malolo Group to explore, with several hilly peaks and
outstanding views of the surrounding islands. Flanked by gorgeous sweeping beaches, this
569-acre island is home to the largest resort in the Mamanucas, plus four small backpacker
resorts. It lies on the outer edges of the Malolo Group, 25 minutes by boat from Malolo and
Castaway Island. The island is split by the
Mana Island Resort
, which occupies the entire
western side of the island, and the
backpacker hostels
squashed in amongst the Fijian vil-
lage on
South Beach
.
Around the coast
Past the rocks enclosing either side of South Beach are fine stretches of secluded sand. It's
possible to
walk
around the entire island in about two hours, mostly along the beachfront, but
make sure it's close to low tide as crossing the rocky points between beaches when wet can
be difficult.
The
lagoon
off South Beach has copious amounts of seaweed, but swim 50m out and you'll
reach a nice drop-off with great visibility for
snorkelling
, coral heads teeming with fish and
the chance to spot the occasional turtle. The beaches on the north side of Mana have even
better snorkelling, with a steep drop-off 50m from shore, particularly off
Dream Beach
.
