EATING AND DRINKING
One of the delights of staying on Malolo Lailai is its choice of restaurants . For food
shopping , Ananda's has a small supermarket (daily 7am-8.30pm), and The Trader (daily
8am-7pm), beside Musket Cove Marina, stocks a good selection of groceries but no alcohol.
Expect to pay double mainland prices. You can buy ready-to-cook meat and fish packs (F$20)
at The Trader and wander over to Ratu Nemani Island Bar to cook on the supplied wood-fired
BBQs.
Ananda's Plantation Island Resort 666 9333. Located on the beach midway between
Plantation and Musket Cove . The Fijian chef's F$35 three-course BBQ is a winner, with a
choice of fish fillet, boneless chicken or sirloin steak cooked in front of you - but with a long
line of diners waiting in turn behind. Otherwise there's a blackboard full of alternatives, from
fettuccine to curry chicken. Come early to ensure a beachside table. Daily 6pm-10pm.
Coffee Cove Musket Cove Marina, accessed from The Trader 666 2215. A pretty setting
overlooking the marina, but the staff are rushed off their feet so don't expect a quick snack.
The pie of the day is good value at F$10 including chips and salad, or try the F$14 gruyère
quiche. Otherwise, sit admiring the view over a F$3.50 cappuccino. Daily 10am-6.30pm.
Dick's Place Musket Cove Resort 664 0805. This resort restaurant has an excellent
menu, from delicious New Zealand lamb shanks to ika vakalolo (traditionally cooked fish in
coconut cream) to risotto, with mains around F$30. If you're here on Thurs you'll be treated
to the sumptuous Pig on the Spit for F$36. The kids' menu portions are huge and very reas-
onably priced. Daily 7.30am-10pm.
Flame Tree Lomani Resort 666 8212. This is a good choice if you want to get away from
the hordes, and kids - it's adults only here. The food is excellent and the setting thoroughly
romantic with just fourteen candlelit tables under a large flame tree. Mains are around F$32,
with the lamb rack an excellent option, and there's a choice of fourteen wines. It's a good
20min walk along the beach from Musket Cove, but if you call ahead they'll happily pick
you up by golf cart. Daily noon-10pm.
Ratu Nemani Island Bar Musket Cove Marina 666 2215. Atmospheric bar on an artificial
island connected to the marina by pontoon and overlooking Malolo Bay. A great spot to sip a
beer, wine or local spirit (all F$4) or try one of the multicoloured exotically named cocktails
(from F$12). Daily 10.30am-11pm.
Malolo
Malolo is the largest island in the Mamanucas, home to two budget resorts as well as one of
the most luxurious resorts in the region. The 220m-high hill fort of Uluisolo looks down on
the island's rich vegetation and white beaches.
