Competent Rock
Intact rock that is fresh, unweathered, and free of discontinuities and reacts to applied
stress as a solid mass is termed competent or sound rock in engineering nomenclature.
Permeability, strength, and deformability are directly related to hardness and density (see
Section 3.2.1) as well as to fabric and cementing. The general engineering properties of
common rocks are summarized in Table 5.16.
