In-Depth Information
At the intersection of University and Bragaw the brass-heavy Front Row Seats Band is
thumping away at “Rock Around the Clock” and “Roll Out the Barrel” and “When the
Saints Go Marching In.” The runners hang a right on Alumni Drive and are greeted by
Bruce Springsteen backing up Dave Stroh booming out over the loudspeaker, “Rose
Stasco has just finished her Heart Run!” Maybe you're walking the Run but when you see
the finish line and the triumphal arch of bright red balloons and all those people applaud-
ing and cheering you on, you can't help yourself, you have to break into a run. Dave reads
your bib number and calls out congratulations and you cross the finish line and summer
officially begins.
I think my best Heart Run ever was something like 46 minutes, and that was only be-
cause I was with my friend, crazy Linda, who was determined to pass everyone, including
people walking their dogs. The winners are just names in the next day's paper to me,
they're over the finish line before I've crossed the start line. Doesn't matter. What matters
is spring is here and the sun is out and so is my town, thousands of us pounding the pave-
ment together, jumpstarting summer.
This year's news flash? I saw more cell phones than mosquitoes. Got to be some kind
of record.
