Aerospace Company for the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Aeronautics and
Space Administration, it was installed on the Hawaiian Island of Oahu and later owned by the
Makani Uwila Power Corporation , which operated it for many years as a commercial power
plant [Spera and Miller 1991].
The 34-meter VAWT, designed and built by the Sandia National Laboratories (SNL),
had a variable-speed generating system rated at 625 kW. Its high-performance Darrieus ro-
tor, 34 m in diameter and 42 m in height, had variable-chord blades with airfoils designed
speciically for VAWT service. [Dodd et al . 1990].
