Funchal
Known as ABS, this is one of
Madeira's smallest producers; so
small, in fact, that the brothers
who run it sell only to “friends”
- fortunately, this includes anyone
who walks through the door. d Rua

This friendly wine shop has a
surprise in the basement - a
Christopher Columbus museum,
put together by Mário Barbeito,
founder of the Barbeito wine
company in 1946. It also has a
display of antique postcards and
books about Madeira. d Avenida

Housed in a charming timber
barn with a cobblestone floor
and a carved stone door that
bears the city's coat of arms and
the date AD 1619, this wine
lodge offers vintages going back
to 1850, as well as younger
wines, miniatures and gift boxes.

Founded by Sr Barbeito, this
wine lodge, with its distinctive
chimney for the estufa , the “hot-
house” that ages the wine, is
tucked away behind Reid's
Palace Hotel. The tasting room is
at the rear, beyond the giant,
iron-hooped barrels of American
oak and satinwood. d Estrada Mon-

^ Loja dos Vinhos, Funchal
Conveniently located in the
heart of the hotel district, and
open late for last-minute gift pur-
chases, this wine shop sells the
vintages of all of Madeira's main
producers, including some rare
bottles that date from the 19th
century. They will also take tele-
phone orders and make hotel
deliveries. d Edifício Eden Mar, Loja 19,
