24. Two analysts were given a standard reference material (SRM) and were asked to
determine its copper concentration (in mg/kg) using the EPA standard method. Each
analyst was given sufficient time so they could produce as many accurate results as
possible. Their results (mg/kg) were as follows:
Analyst A
45.2, 47.3, 51.2, 50.4, 52.2, 48.7 (Standard error s¼2.62)
Analyst B
49.4, 50.3, 51.6, 52.1, 50.9 (Standard error s¼1.06)
(a) For Analyst A, is 52.2 mg/kg a possible outlier?
(b) Calculate the RSD for each student; which analyst is more precise?
(c) If the known concentration of copper in SRM is 49.5 mg/kg, which analyst is more
accurate (without considering the deletion of outliers if any)?
25. Draw a schematic diagram of a monitoring well showing as a minimum the casing, filter
pack, annular seal, well screen, and the above ground well protective cover and post.
26. Define the following geological and hydrological terms: clay, vadose zone, piezometer,
water table well, confined aquifer, and hydraulic conductivity.
27. For the environmental standard related to following: (a) ambient air, (b) workplace air,
(c) drinking water, and (d) wastewater effluent discharged into receiving water, identify
the particular environmental regulation (e.g., CAA, CWA) and search the CFR Web site
for the numerical standards for (a) to (d).
28. Which CFR would you find methodologies for drinking water: (a) 29 CFR 1900, (b) 40
CFR 141, (c) 40 CFR 401, (d) 21 CFR 189?
