8.4 PRACTICAL ASPECTS OF UV-VISIBLE
AND INFRARED SPECTROMETRY
8.4.1 Common Tips for UV-Visible Spectroscopic
Analysis
The use of UV-VIS spectrometers is pretty straightforward. The needed training is
minimal compared to all other instruments. Few helpful tips to the beginners are
listed below.
Use only quartz cuvettes (sample cell) in the UV range (200-380 nm). Plastic
and disposable cuvettes are fine in the visible range (380-800 nm), but will be
melted if samples are in certain solvents such as hexane (Fig. 8.18 a, b).
Watch out different sides of the cuvette and the light path; do not hold
(scratch) the smooth sides of the cuvette. Make sure that the light passes
through the cuvette with the smooth sides.
