USGS Methods
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has published a large number of reports and
methods. Many of them are now being served online for free access of files in PDF
format. Sampling and analytical methods are related to the Techniques of Water
Resource Investigations (TWRI), which can be accessed at http://pubs.usgs.gov/
twri. The TWRI reports include 9 topics:
Book 1: Collection of Water Data by Direct Measurement
Book 2: Collection of Environmental Data
Book 3: Applications of Hydraulics
Book 4: Hydraulic Analysis and Interpretation
Book 5: Laboratory Analysis
Book 6: Modeling Techniques
Book 7: Automated Data Processing and Computations
Book 8: Instrumentation
Book 9: Handbooks for Water-Resources Investigations.
Book 5 of TWRI addresses laboratory analysis for: inorganic substances, minor
elements, organic substances, radioactive substances in water and fluvial sediments,
and the collection and analysis for aquatic biological and microbiological samples.
Many of these methods are approved for use in analysis of wastewater compliance
monitoring samples.
The USGS methods are identified by a letter followed by a four-digit number
and then a year designator to indicate the revision date. The letters are: P (physical
characteristics), I (inorganic substance), O (organic substance), B (biological
method), R (radioactive determination), S (sediment characteristic), and E (emission
spectrographic method). The first digit of the four-digit code for the organic and
inorganic methods indicates the type of determination:
0 Sample preparation
1 Manual method for dissolved parameters
2 Automated method for dissolved parameters
3 Manual method for analyzing water-suspended sediment mixtures
4 Automated method for analyzing water-suspended sediment mixtures
5 Manual method for analyzing bottom material
6 Automated method for analyzing bottom material
7 Method for determining suspended parameters
9 Method for fish and other materials
