In-Depth Information
( Click here ) happens every September in Ceduna. Back towards Adelaide, Port Lincoln
has a big rep for big tuna, and the big tuna-fishing fleet that lines the town's coffers.
Cheese
Cheese, glorious cheese! There's plenty of the good stuff (at great prices) at Adelaide's
Central Market ( Click here ), or head for the Adelaide Hills where the Woodside Cheese
Wrights ( Click here ) specialises in delightfully gloopy soft cheeses. Nearby in
Hahndorf, Udder Delights ( Click here ) (ha-ha) is a cool cafe with a dedicated cheese-
tasting counter. In picture-perfect Angaston in the Barossa Valley, follow your nose to
the marvellous Barossa Valley Cheese Company ( Click here ), where sublime feta, brie
and even haloumi vie for your affections. In McLaren Vale township you'll find Blessed
Cheese ( Click here ), purveyor of all things cheesy. Inland from here near Mt Compass,
Alexandrina Cheese Company ( www.alexandrinacheese.com.au ; Sneyd Rd, Mt Jagged
via Mt Compass; noon-5pm Mon-Fri, 10am-4.30pm Sat & Sun) is an old-fashioned
cheese maker with individually named Jersey cows (and super cheddar).
Honey
An anomaly of natural quarantine, Kangaroo Island is home to the purest strain of Lig-
urian bees in the world (purer, even, than the busy bees in Liguria itself). Imported for
their hard-working ways and passive temperament, they've survived here for decades
without generic interference from mainland Australian bees. The honey they produce,
sourced from native wildflowers and eucalyptus blooms, is divine. Try some at the low-
key Clifford's Honey Farm ( Click here ) (which also does honey ice-cream!), or the
more touristy Island Beehive ( Click here ).
Fruit & Nuts
Need a bit of a health infusion? Tee-up a bowlful of plump Adelaide Hills strawberries.
At Beerenberg Strawberry Farm ( Click here ) in Hahndorf you can pick your own
between November and May. While we're talking vitamin C, it would be simply remiss
to venture along the Murray River without sampling some Riverland citrus fruit. Berri is
the orange-juice capital of the known universe. Further south on the peaty plateaus of the
Fleurieu Peninsula, load up on blueberries at the Blueberry Patch ( 08-8556 9100;
www.blueberrypatch.com.au ; Nangkita Rd, Mt Compass; by appointment Dec-Feb) .
In nearby Willunga, the prevailing passion is for almonds. The Almond Blossom
Festival ( www.willungafestivals.com ) happens here in the last week of July. Willunga is
also home to the best farmers market in SA, such as the logically named Willunga Farm-
ers Market ( Click here ).
