a hot day. Namatjira Dr then heads south and is sealed as far as Tylers Pass Lookout ,
which provides a dramatic view of Tnorala (Grosse Bluff), the legacy of an earth-shatter-
ing comet impact.
4 Sleeping & Eating
There are basic camping grounds (adult/child $3.30/1.65) at Ellery Creek Big Hole, Red-
bank Gorge and 6km west of Serpentine Gorge at Serpentine Chalet (a 4WD or high-
clearance 2WD vehicle is recommended to reach the chalet ruins). The ritzy camping
area (adult/child $6.60/3.30) at Ormiston Gorge has showers, toilets, gas barbecues and
picnic tables.

$30/ 160; ) At the edge of the national park is the popular Glen Helen Resort which
has an idyllic back verandah overlooking the spectacular gorge. This comfortable retreat
contains a busy restaurant-pub (breakfast and lunch $8 to $20, dinner $30 to $35) that
serves hearty meals and showcases live music on the weekend. There are also 4WD tours
available and helicopter flights ranging from $55 (five minutes) to $425, with the $145
Ormiston Gorge flight representing the best value for money.
RED CENTRE WAY (MEREENIE LOOP)
The Red Centre Way is the 'back road' from Alice to the Rock. It incorporates an 'inner
loop' comprising Namatjira ( Click here ) and Larapinta Drive, plus the rugged Mereenie
Loop Rd, the short cut to Kings Canyon. This dusty, heavily corrugated road is not to be
taken lightly, and hire car companies won't permit their 2WD to be driven on it.

Larapinta Drive
Continuing south from Standley Chasm, Larapinta Dr crosses the intersection with Nam-
atjira Dr and the Hugh River before reaching the turn-off to the Western Arrernte com-
munity of Wallace Rockhole , 18km off the main road and 109km from Alice Springs.
