Larrimah
POP 18
Once upon a time the railway line from Darwin came as far as Birdum, 8km south of tiny
Larrimah, which itself is 185km south of Katherine. Larrimah Museum (Mahoney St; ad-
mission by donation; 7am-9pm) , in the former telegraph repeater station opposite the
Larrimah Hotel, tells of the town's involvement with the railway, the Overland Telegraph
and WWII. The town was built in 1940, essentially as life support for the nearby Gorrie
Airfield.
Originally a WWII officers' mess, Larrimah Hotel ( 08-8975 9931; unpowered/
powered sites $18/22, d $60-75; ) is a cheerfully rustic and quirky pub offering basic
rooms, meals (mains $10 to $29) and a menagerie of animals. Fran's Devonshire Tea-
house (Stuart Hwy; meals $4-15; 8am-4pm) makes a great lunchtime pit stop. Try a le-
gendary camel or buffalo pie, some roast lamb with damper, or just a Devonshire tea (a
long way from Exeter) or fresh coffee.
Daly Waters
