In-Depth Information
12 The geologic highlight of SA's Flinders Ranges is Wilpena Pound ( Click
here ) , known to the area's Adnyamathanha people as Ikara. The local
campground is shaded by native pines, the Wilpena resort is attractive and af-
fordable, and there are bushwalks to suit everyone from over-achievers to the
terminally lazy. But the real lure is Ikara itself: an astonishing formation of purple-
brown rock escarpments encircling a vast, dusty bowl full of arid scrub,
homestead ruins and wandering emus. On a camera-wielding flight or a pictur-
esque hike, the Pound is seriously scenic.
