Pine Creek
POP 381
A short detour off the Stuart Hwy, Pine Creek was once the scene of a frantic gold rush.
The open-cut mine here closed in 1995, but today there's still gold and iron-ore mining
and exploration nearby. A few of the 19th-century timber and corrugated-iron buildings
still survive. The Kakadu Hwy (Rte 21) branches off the Stuart Hwy here, connecting it
to Cooinda and Jabiru, making Pine Creek a useful base for exploring the region.
