Four Birds
CAFE $
( 32 Smith St Mall, Shop 2, Star Village; items $4-8; breakfast & lunch Mon-Fri, plus Sat Jun-Aug)
Nooked into the arcade on the site of the old Star Cinema (a '74 cyclone victim), this
hole-in-the-wall does simple things very well: bagels, toasted sandwiches, muffins, pan-
inis and coffee (we reckon it's the best in Darwin). Book-reading office types and travel-
lers sit on stools scattered under a burgeoning frangipani tree.
Roma Bar
CAFE $
(
www.romabar.com.au
; 9-11 Cavenagh St; mains $7-15; breakfast & lunch; )
Roma is a local
institution and meeting place for lefties, literati and travellers. Well away from the crazi-
ness of Mitchell St, with free wi-fi, great coffee and juices, and you can get anything
from muesli and eggs benedict for breakfast to excellent toasted focaccia and fish curry
for lunch.
Stokes Hill Wharf
SEAFOOD, FAST FOOD $
(

;
Stokes Hill Wharf; mains $8-16; lunch & dinner)
Squat-
ting on the end of Stokes Hill Wharf is a hectic food centre with half-a-dozen food coun-
ters and outdoor tables lined up along the pier. It's a pumping place for some fish and
chips, oysters, a stir-fry, a laksa or just a cold sunset beer.
Vietnam Saigon Star
VIETNAMESE $
(21 Smith St, Shop 4; mains $12-18; lunch Mon-Fri, dinner daily; )
Darwin's speediest, shi-
niest Vietnamese restaurant serves up inexpensive rice-paper rolls, and beef, pork, chick-
en and seafood dishes with a multitude of sauces. Vegetarians are well catered for and
there are good-value lunch specials.
