In-Depth Information
Dreamium
Hypothetical molecule consisting of CO 2 chemically bound to another
molecule ZZ. The nice, but very unrealistic, thing about dreamium is that
one can use any molecule ZZ to investigate the large-scale production of
a hypothetical product made from CO 2 .
Emission scenarios
Prediction of future carbon emissions. In this text, we often refer to the
IPCC scenarios A1, A2, B1, B2.
Enhanced oil recovery
Injection of CO 2 into oil fi elds with declining primary productivity.
The recovery of oil is enhanced because the CO 2 decreases the
viscosity.
Entropy of mixing
Change in entropy when we mix pure components.
Facilitated transport
A diffusion mechanism in which a chemical reaction enhances the per-
meability of one of the components without decreasing its selectivity.
Faint young sun paradox
The observation that the sun was much weaker when the earth was
formed than it is now. Such a weak sun would result in a temperature of
the earth that would be too low for liquid water to be on earth. The para-
dox is that water was observed at these times.
Feed
A gas stream that enters a specifi c process unit such as a membrane unit
or an adsorber.
