Health, safety,
and environmental impacts
The scale over which geological carbon sequestration must be carried
out to reduce CO 2 emissions means that sequestration itself will have its
own set of potential health, safety, and environmental (HSE) impacts, as
well as present issues related to sustainability (e.g., [10.36]). Figure 10.4.1
illustrates potential HSE impacts of sequestration in terms of their quali-
tative potential severity and the depth at which they might occur.
As shown in Figure 10.4.1 , the impacts that occur at the greatest
depths are not classifi ed as having large HSE impact [10.37]. For exam-
ple, the unplanned intrusion of CO 2 into hydrocarbon reservoirs due to
