The distribution of the various formations over the planet is shown in
Figure 8.3.4.
This fi gure shows a reasonable distribution over all conti-
nents of sedimentary basins (the type of geological structure where one
fi nds aquifers, hydrocarbon reservoirs, and coal seams). However, one
would need to make a more detailed regional assessment to see how the
availability of formations matches the location of point sources that emit
the CO
2
we wish to sequester. In Chapter 10, we will discuss the capacity
aspects in more detail.
