Carbon dioxide
The protagonist in this text is
CO
2
, so we need some basic
data about this molecule. CO
2
is colorless and, at low con-
centrations, odorless. The
molecular mass of CO
2
is 44 g/
mol. At standard temperature
and pressure, the density of
carbon dioxide is around 1.8
kg/m
3
, about 1.5 times that of
air. Because it is heavier than
air, it has a propensity to sink,
at least in the absence of exter-
nal convective mixing (e.g.,
breezes and winds). This
makes CO
2
a safety hazard for
asphyxiation.
