In-Depth Information
From William Street, walk south along the right side of Rossville Street toward Free
Derry Corner. The murals will all be on your right.
The first mural you'll walk past is the colorful Peace, showing the silhouette of a
dove in flight (left side of mural) and an oak leaf (right side of mural), both created from
a single ribbon. A peace campaign asked Derry city schoolchildren to write suggestions
for positive peacetime images; their words inspired this artwork. The dove is a traditional
symbol of peace, and the oak leaf is a traditional symbol of Derry—recognized by both
communities. The dove flies from the sad blue of the past toward the warm yellow of the
future.
Next, The Hunger Strikers features two long-haired figures wearing blankets. This
mural represents the IRA prisoners who refused to wear the uniforms of common criminal
inmates—an attempt to force the British to treat them instead as legitimate political pris-
oners (who were allowed to wear their own clothes). The giant red letter H looms behind
them, a symbol of the H-block layout of Maze Prison near Belfast.
