In-Depth Information
Nationalists display a red-hand-on-a-yellow-shield as a symbol of the ancient
province of Ulster. It was the official crest of the once-dominant O'Neill clan (who
fought tooth and nail against English rule) and today signifies resistance to British
rule in these communities.
But you'll more often see the red hand in Unionist areas. They see it as a potent
symbol of the political entity of Northern Ireland. The Ulster Volunteer Force chose
it for their symbol in 1913 and embedded it in the center of the Northern Irish flag
upon partition of the island in 1921. You may see the red hand clenched as a fist in
Loyalist murals. One Loyalist paramilitary group even named itself the Red Hand
Commandos.
