Orientation to Belfast
For the first-time visitor in town for a quick look, Belfast is pretty simple. There are
four zones of interest: northern (Titanic Quarter—docklands with Odyssey entertainment
complex and Titanic Belfast), western (working-class sectarian neighborhoods west of
thefreeway), central (DonegallSquare,CityHall,pedestrianshopping,TI),and southern
(Botanic Gardens, Queen's University, Ulster Museum).
The modern bookends of sightseeing interest are the Titanic Belfast attraction (in the
Titanic Quarter to the north) and the Lyric Theatre (near the university district to the
south). Their contemporary angularities are hard to miss, as they contrast sharply with the
red-brick uniformity of old Belfast. But the core of your city navigating will hinge on four
more central landmarks (listed from north to south): Albert Clock Tower, City Hall, Shaft-
esbury Square, and Queen's University. Find them on your map, and use them to navigate
as you stroll the town.
